April: Heartworm Awareness Month

Heartworm disease is spread to our cats and dogs by mosquito bite. Southern Ohio is affected by this yucky parasite almost year-round. If it is warm and humid enough, no matter what month of the year it is, mosquitoes can come out and bite.

Prevention of heartworm disease is simple: a once monthly treatment, either oral or topical. These preventions cost anywhere from $4.00 to $20.00 per month. This range covers generic heartworm prevention like Tri-Heart Plus, to products like Trifexis, an oral medication that prevents heartworm, fleas, and several intestinal parasites.

While heartworm prevention is cheap, heartworm treatment for a dog is expensive and painful. There is no treatment available for heartworm positive cats.
