New Flea & Tick Preventions

Changes are coming to the flea and tick products we are currently carrying in our hospital. The changes will happen slowly, so don't panic! But, a few of our products are being replaced by different products. The first changes will be coming to our line of preventions for cats: namely, we will be discontinuing Cheristin (a flea prevention.) First we will begin carrying Revolution, which prevents fleas, heartworm, ear mites, and some intestinal parasites. Our main reasoning for this change is that Revolution offers greater protection for your cat for roughly the same price. Due to Cheristin's frequent price increases we could no longer justify continuing with this product when Revolution was available and more comprehensive.

The major issue clients may notice with this is that Cheristin was approved as an over the counter drug while Revolution is not. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however we will have to see your feline friend at least once per year in order to prescribe Revolution.

Second, we will be carrying Bravecto Topical for cats when it is released in early 2017. Bravecto is a topical flea and tick prevention and one dose lasts for THREE months! The cost is, of course, higher for this product but offers the convenience of only having to apply something four times per year instead of twelve. Bravecto can only be used on cats that are 6 months or older, so Revolution will be available for kittens until that time. Bravecto is also a prescription only product.

Later this year and going into 2017 we will also be transiting our canine products. Activyl topical is no longer being manufactured and once our suppliers run out so will we. Once it is available again it will most likely be available over the counter at pet store retailers. To avoid the issues we have had with other topical preventions going over the counter in the past, we will not be restocking Activyl. Instead, we will continue to carry Nexgard (an oral monthly flea and tick prevention) and also transition to Bravecto for dogs.

As you may notice, the preventions we will be carrying are all prescription only products. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however it is important for cats and dogs to be seen by a veterinarian once per year as part of a comprehensive wellness program. During these exams we can catch illness early to help your pet live a long and healthy life.
